Just before 8 am this morning Rescue 53 was dispatched as part of the Chester County Rescue Task Force to assist East Whiteland Fire (Station 5) with a high angle rescue. About 15 minutes before, Station 5 units were dispatched to the Glasgow Quarry on Morehall Road (PA Route 29) for a serious accident. Reports were being received that a large articulating dump truck had rolled off of the roadway inside the quarry property. First arriving crews found a large vehicle approximately 100+ feet down an embankment with the driver trapped inside the cab and injured.

Rescue 53 responded with 7 members, three of whom are rope technicians. As additional rope technicians were preparing to leave in Squad 53, a request for trench rescue equipment was made by the Incident Commander. Fame crews quickly hooked up the trailers and both Squad and Utility 53 made the response, each with a trailer.
Task Force members were met with a very challenging scene upon arrival. Poor road conditions within the quarry, coupled with heavy rainfall, made a difficult situation even worse.

Fame rescue technicians, Kevin Beans and DJ Matthews were then lowered with additional equipment to assist an East Whiteland technician already with the victim. He was able to remove himself away from the overturned truck and was placed in a SKED for the long haul back up the very steep embankment. Paramedics from Malvern and Berwyn placed him in a litter and transported him to the local trauma center.

Crews worked hard to overcome very sloppy conditions, and difficult terrain to complete a successful rescue. Check out the Chester County Rescue Task Force Facebook page for photos.

Crews took over an hour to clean up and decontaminate our rope rescue equipment, personnel and apparatus. Additional Fame volunteers staffed the station in order to handle any other emergency calls.
