Just before 6:30 pm, Stations 51, 53 and Ambulance 55 were dispatched to the 300 block of West Gay Street in West Chester Borough for a reported house fire. Chester County Communications advised units that they were receiving multiple calls and also had a report of a burn victim. Engine 51-1 arrived and reported a three story brick twin dwelling with fire on the first floor and heavy smoke throughout. They requested the Working Fire Dispatch and then stretched an 1 3/4" hose line to attack the fire. Ladder 53 arrived and split, the Inside Team performed a primary search of the fire building, while the Outside Team placed portable ladders and operated on the roof. Assistant 53 (K. Corcoran) arrived and established Gay Street Command. Additional WCFD units arrived and were assigned to the attached exposure and to assist in fire suppression. Multiple hose lines were deployed. While the bulk of the fire was quickly extinguished, conditions inside deteriorated. Attack crews were briefly withdrawn from the building to regroup and remount a final attack. Crews conducted extensive overhaul to find hidden pockets of fire. A second alarm was called to provide relief crews. One person was transported to the hospital for treatment of a minor burn, while another was assisted by the American Red Cross. The cause is being investigated by the West Chester PD and the Chester County Fire Marshall's Office.
